Newark Open Doors 2012: Bushberg Project Submissions & Transmissions

On Saturday I drove into Newark with a little trepidation to drop my work off at 77 Market Street for the Newark Open Doors 2012: Bushberg Project  Submissions & Transmissions curated by Rupert Ravens. After navigating the one way system I eventually managed to find a parking place close to the gallery. A huge very raw space with a group of very friendly workmen but not too many signs that a huge art happening was about to happen. The workmen very kindly found Rupert Ravens for me, who put me at ease and I was able to deliver my work. Rupert assured me that the space would be totally transformed by Friday night, so after signing the paperwork, I left my work with him and headed home.

Today I received an e-mail from Rupert with a link to the page for theshow. I am now really excited about Friday and am a bit awed with the company I will be keeping. The huge space which on Saturday seemed impossible to fill by Friday I am quite sure is going to be quite a spectacle with installations by artists who have shown both nationally and internationally. Here is a sampling:

AK Airways will be there with a sculptural installation made from inflatable objects, their work has been presented at MOMA, underground raves and NASA…

Sculpture by Matt Stone of Brooklyn

Richard Wislocky, a West Orange Native and mega producer extraordinaire who has performed across the globe as well as “constructed a plethora of various multi-medium’ed” installations will also be represented.

Peter Schlangenbader a contemporary German Expressionist artist.

Beaded sculptures by A. Kimberlin Blackburn.

Newark born photographer Manuel Acevedo who has shown both nationally and internationally.

And many more…

Not to mention myself Ann Vollum!

Other South Orange artists inthe show include photographer Joy Yagid, installation artist Kate Dodd and painter and print maker Larry McKim who both teach at Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ.

So don’t miss this show, it is sure to be fun.

Don’t Miss The Maplewood, South Orange Artist Studio Tour, Sunday June 6

This is a great opportunity to meet your favorite local artists and to wander around their studios. More than 70 local artists will be participating this year. To help you get around, there is a shuttle bus for the first time, that make stops at the train. I will be at the Baird again this year with BeastlyBeasties. I have some new fun and colorful prints just right for your child’s room and yours, why not pick up some note cards too, or a cool tee…

For more information check out Nancy Tobin’s article in The Local.

Booked 7 (First Instalment)

I was gallery sitting yesterday and took the opportunity to photograph some of the wonderful books on display in “Booked 7” at the Pierro Gallery in South Orange, NJ. The exhibit will broaden your horizons as to just what a book is… Here are some of the books in the show by the many talented artists who make up the Book Arts Round table. Enjoy!

BeastlyBeasties Original Drawing to be Auctioned off for Haiti

I was recently asked by Frank X. O’Leary”  to donate a drawing for a fundraiser for Haiti this Saturday, 27th February at St. Georges Church in Maplewood, NJ. The money raised by SOMA Artists for Haiti will be donated to Partners In Health. This organization has been working in Haiti for over 20 years providing health care for the poor. The event is from 4:00 to 7:00 pm and includes a silent auction of art work and music by some of Maplewood and South Orange’s talented artists and musicians. I am sure it will make a welcome break from the two day snow storm we are having… Frank was very nice and came by to pick up the piece yesterday evening just in case the hill I live on becomes impassable in the snow…

And so I give you “haiti”,  ink drawing, mat size 11″ x 14″, drawing 7.5″ x 9.5″

SOMA Artisan’s Guild

Recently I have been busy organizing a new group, along with my friend Katie Clayton, for artists and craft people in the Maplewood South Orange area of New Jersey. The group goes by the name of SOMA Artisan’s Group, our purpose is to bring like minded people together and to help our small businesses grow. So far we have organized two small craft shows and are working on an Etsy team. Our first meeting on September 10th was a big success with 22 people coming to our first meeting. More details on our blog and on The Maplewood Patch.

On Sunday I took part in the South Orange & Maplewood Artists Studio Tour which was a wonderful experience. Artists open up their studios to the public for the day. I was at the Baird in South Orange with six other artists. These photos are not great but they show you my little corner where I sold my latest t-shirts designs and aprons.
